New York Counties Death Records
New York has 62 counties, each with its own system for death records. In most counties, the town or city clerk where the death took place keeps the original record. The County Clerk handles court records, land records, and some marriage records, but typically does not hold birth or death certificates. For death records from 1881 forward, the New York State Department of Health also has copies on file. New York City's five boroughs run a separate system through the NYC Department of Health.
